The Multidisciplinary Transportation Engineering Approach
The broad
base for planning suggested here requires backgrounds and approaches broader
than those that highway and transportation engineers have from their formal
educations or on-the-job activities. Many transportation and urban transportation planning agencies
have added people from other engineering disciplines, archaeologists,
architects, landscape architects, economists, political scientists,
sociologists, and other specialists to their planning teams to expand their
expertise and be sure that all facets of the various proposals are covered.
Another aim is to represent the views of the several involved publics with
their different sets of values, needs, and desires. This, done properly,
generates public confidence in the agency's procedures and decisions.
