National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
NHTSA is a division of DOT whose entire effort is devoted to highway safety. Its activities take many forms, among them:
1. Administering federal grant programs for highway safety.
2. Developing and promulgating safe design standards for automobiles, buses, and trucks.
3. Working through state governments to develop state and local educational and informational programs to promote highway safety.
4. Carrying out research to improve many aspects of highway safety.
