The most important quality of traffic signs is the value of attention (attention value), the properties of easy read (legibility), and familiarity (recognition).
Attention value: characteristics in arousing the attention of:
  • Target value: the qualities that make a sign or signs stand out from the background
  • Priority value: the quality that makes the sign may read the first time in a variety of other signs.

Legibility: the characteristics of the readings.
  • Pure legibility: the distance where a sign can be read in infinite time.
  • Glance legibility: the distance where a sign can be read second, usually from 0.5 to 1.5 seconds with a cone approached the diameter of 5 ft (1.5 m) at a distance of 100 ft.

Recognition: a symbol of recognition and understanding by the use of standard colors, sizes, symbols and text.
