Traffic accidents continue to be a leading public health problem. Although significant strides have been made in improving highway safety during the past several decades, motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of death for people ages 6 to 27 years.


Motor vehicle crashes in the United States impose an economic penalty on the public of $150 billion each year. According to the Louisiana Department of Public Safety, the cost of fatal traffic crashes in Louisiana for year 1999 alone was well over $2 billion.
