The term aggregate refers to granular mineral particles that are widely used for highway bases, subbases, and backfill. Aggregates are also used in combination with a cementing material to form concretes for bases, subbases, wearing surfaces, and drainage structures. Sources of aggregates include natural deposits of sand and gravel, pulverized concrete and asphalt pavements, crushed stone, and blastfurnance slag.
