Bus stops that are properly located, adequately designed, and effectively enforced can improve bus service and expendite traffic flow. Pre ferably, the frequency of stops should not exceed 5 or 6 per kilometer (8 to 10 per mile). Practically speaking, this means that stops should be provided every block where city blocks are greater than about 150 m (500 ft) long and every other block where blocks are shorter

Bus stops may be located on the near side of intersections or at midblock. The choice of location will depend on the geometric design of the intersection, the proximity of large generators of passengers, whether turnin movements are permitted to faar side bus stops include
Some of the advantages to far side bus stops include:
  1. They make the curb lane available for traffic, increasing the intersection capacity.
  2. Theyreduce conflicts between stopped buses and right turning vehicles.
  3. They lessen the problem of buses blocking the view of drivers approaching the intersection
  4. They reduce pedestrian accidents

On the other hand, near side bus stops re prefered where transit flows are heavy but traffic and parking problems are not extensive. Near side stops are usually near a crosswalk, making it easier for passengers to board he buses. Also, with near side stops there is less interference with traffic turning into hte bus route from a side street. Furthermore, bus drivers tend to prefer ner side stops because it is easier for the buses to reenter the traffic stream, especially where curb parking is allowed
